Will the 5Ghz feel a lot faster then the 4Ghz I7? I'm thinking about building a 5Ghz+ E8600 Rig for a friend with a sweet SSD Raid 0 Setup along with a set of HD 4770's. Is it wrong to go with a C2D over an I7 these days?

i7 4GHz FTW...
The C2D @ that speed( :O Possible ???) maybe would have comparable game play to i7...but as current/ future games tend to/ will take advantage of multiple cores, the i7 would be the best bet in the long run...
And as for the apps, i7 hands down...

I'd go with the i7. Besides, there's no guarantee the E8600 would even hit that speed on any reasonable voltage.

Absolutely not in all circumstances except for boot up for some reason. I know this because I just recently went from an E8600 @ 5.1 Ghz to an i7 @ 4.2 Ghz. Also do NOT expect to hit 5 Ghz on an E8600, few do and the ones that do need some serious water cooling (check my signature for my loop). That said the i7 isn't any faster unless gaming with 4 GPUS or converting videos.

It wont, ever. That's why there is unreasonable voltage. :sol:

SSD RAID 0... I hope you have a good RAID controller for that.

well, while you are at it, think about 6GHz Phenom II </jk>

no way man, maybe with liquid nitrogen or helium but not 24/7 :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non: :non:

With a good cooler you shouldn't have much trouble taking an E8600 over 4GHz, but 5? You can hit that speed if you get a good sample, but it's likely your overclock will fall short of that and even then you need a good MB, Quailty PSU as ripples will kill your stability, and RAM that will take your intended FSB. Anyway a 4GHz i7 would generally be faster than a 5Ghz C2D in anything that would actually stress the CPU :D.

I say it depends on your budget. If you have the money for a good i7 system then go for it. If your budget is a little more modest then it may be best to go for the E8600, shoot for a 4Ghz clock speed, and devote the money to other components, like the GPU.

I got a Pentium 3 at 1.13 Mhz stable :) Didnt they even get to 1.4.............

edit - yup

Core i7 can beat a QX9770 at the same clock speed. I would imagine that it could destroy and E8600that is 1GHz faster, and it would also run a lot cooler.

Run a lot cooler? Definitely not - the E8600 will run far cooler than the i7 will. The i7 will flatten the E8600 for raw CPU power though.

Wow. That is quite the underclock. 1.13 MHZ! Wow.

No fair, the i7 isn't using liquid nitrogen!

Not at the speeds the OP posted. You can at least visualise a i7 at 4GHz without using NO2...
