Should i connect spdif?

I bought an gtx 260 core 216, and it comes with a spdif cable, should i connect it to the motherboard, and what is it used for. does this have anything to do with high definition audio

Its for transmitting the boards/sound cards sound through the audio controler on the card for output. In other words only use it if you plan on using HDMI from the card to a TV.
