have you tested each gpu individually in both pci slots to insure that isn't the problem?

Reply to kyeana

yes both gpu's work in the no 1 pcie slot individually but havn't tested in the secondary pcie slot can I run a gpu in the sec pcie slot without one in the first?

Reply to smokengunz

yes, you should be able to because I'd guess some people put their cards in the 2nd slot so it runs cooler and the cpu stays cooler.

with gpu in no 2 slot:
-no display on startup at all
-gpu fan runs on high speed the whole time

do I need to change something or has my mobo died:(

check your CPU for broken/bent pins. make sure there isn't nothing on them like thermal paste anywhere. re-do the thermal paste job.
RAM voltage?

or

some motherboards only take the card in the primary slot when 2 are not installed for SLI
