I am curious as to what good putting a SSD drive into an aging computer would do. Does it breath new life into these machines the same as upgrading the ram from 512mb to 1gb?

Lets say a pentium 3, 1000mhz machine. or a slow pentium 4 ~2000mhz

Is the improved hard drive speed big enough improvement to keep these old clunkers around?

No, might make windows boot faster, might make programs faster, however ram allows more things to run at once, and late in the system life, porgrams are made for the faster computers so it bogs on the systems resources, to high of ram requirements, to many CPU cycles, a faster HHD will most likely do nothing.
