Transferring whole disk image from HDD to SSD

Can anyone tell me how to transfer my entire disk image from one hard drive to another? I have a WD 640 GB HDD that doesn't have too much on it but I'm installing a Corsair SSD and would like to avoid having to reload Windows as well as all my applications that I use. Any help would be appreciated.

Use imaging software like acronis or ghost. There are some formatting considerations depending on the OS you use that can effect performance.

Is there a way to make this work to just transfer the used space on the disk? I've pared it down to less than 40 GB on the old drive (the SSD is 128 GB), but it keeps trying to create an image of the entire disk which is much too large for the SSD to take. I'm using Macrium Reflect Free.

Sorry, I've never used reflect before. I know Acronis can resize a partion on restore as long as the drive is large enough to hold the actual data.
