Sound Problem

I have a computer that was an office computer. I believe that it came with the sound 'turned off'. It was re-worked later for non-office use, but the sound was not changed. I installed a sound card but the only sound I can get is through my cd player that I plugged into the sound card. How do I turn the system sound back on. I'm novice in this area.

start>control panel>sound>Right click>Show disabled devices...Enable everything.
