I have this problem with my ATI Radeon HD 3800: while playing World of Warcraft (don't have any other games, so I did not test it on something else) my screen turns into this (2D graphics stay the same but 3D just dies):
my friend suggests my video card is going to die soon. Could anyone help me out here? I don't really want to buy a new video card until i know the real problem behind this.

This sounds like an overheating problem or PSU problem. Download ATI TOOL or rivatuner and check out the temperatures on your card. Also, could you list the name and amperage (namely 12V rail) of your power supply?
I wouldn't suggest running anything intensive on your system at the moment.
