im building just a regular work PC for my uncle

cpu- 7750 BE or 5050e

gpu- integrated 3200

mb- GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-US2H (Micro ATX) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128379

os- xp pro x64

hd- WD 640 GB black
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822136319
-->74.99, free shipping

ram- 2gig (2X1) ddr2 800

case/psu- Linkworld 43706-228FU+P04 with 430 watt power supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811164118

ill get some some type of cheap dvd drive and modem (he has dial up)

all its going to be doing is MS office, internet, photos, and some lite video editing.

price must stay under 450, its at ~440 right now but thats with the 640 gig black edition hard drive

i want to go with a 320 gig or 250 gig HD because that would be more than enough but i wanted the speed of the WD 640 black, any fast cheap 320 gigs out there? by fast i mean faster than a regular old 7200 16 MB cache one

i want to go with the 7750 but the 5050e is so much more efficient that i might go with it

motherboard suggestions would be great, i have yet to really dig into micro atx mobos

and no thanks, f*** vista i dont care if i save 300 bucks

thanks

The 320GB Caviar is just slightly faster than the 640GB version, so why not just lessen your planned capacity to enjoy price savings?

i found a nice cheap 320 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822136098

it has only 8 megs of caches but most people say that doesnt make much of a difference

Reply to luke904

Yes it doesn't makes a significant difference.
Everything else looks good.

May I ask why the chosen OS is XP x64? with 2x1GB of RAM the added cost of an x64 OS seems pointless.

Reply to g3force

What g3force said, it would be better to go with xp home for that system

because 64 is faster, sure half the apps out there are only 32 and not all programs are compatible but it still is faster in just regular desktop stuff and boots up alot faster. i have a 7750 with 4 gigs on x64 (i had 2 gigs when i tested this, one stick) and i boot up in 77 secs, 27 of that is all bios. (i stop timing when all startup programs were loaded). + 4 gb is a possible upgrade down the road

i've decided to go with an atx system though and an athlon 2 250
is that processor a worthy upgrade over the 7750?

65 watt 3 ghz with 2 megs of L2, no L3 for $87 or a 95 watt 2.7 GHz with 1 meg of L2 and 2 of L3 for $60?

price is now only 431

I've benched boot-up time differences between x86 and x64 Vista copies and there was no significant difference between them (give or take 3 seconds). Boot-up and application launch times were only manipulated by HDD type; the faster the better.

My second point is that this is a work PC, and as such you want maximum program compatibility. You said yourself:

The ONLY program that may have proper x64 support is the video editing you mentioned. Otherwise, all the programs will be bogged down by the added memory usage and possibly by being incompatible with the x64 operating system.

If the system was built with 4 GB of memory upfront AND needed the extra memory for gaming, extensive video editing, some forms of auto CAD etc. XP 64bit would be a more attractive option. Otherwise, I suggest going for XP 32bit and save a bit of money.

P.S. Windows XP and Vista are roughly the same price at this time.

i am considering it. i found an awesome deal on a phenom 2 940 and 790 GX motherboard combo for only $210. such a good deal... so much overkill... would put the price up by 50.... should i go with xp home, find a cheaper hd and ram, to make up for it?

Reply to luke904

The extra ram is what is making it boot faster, not the 64 bit extensions. It may be that it is getting to the desktop a bit sooner with more ram depending on startup programs.

BTW, have win 7 running on an emachine 3200 single coor with 1 gig and it runs as well as the xp home it replaced, maybe upgrade him to win 7 later on as it runs better than vista.

Yes that would be a better choice.
Change the os to xp home,2Gb cheap transcend or any other brand, and 250 GB or 160GB HD.
Or if it still doesn't fit in the budget then consider buying second hand parts.

BTW are you taking any advices from ur uncle?
