I don't yet have a device with Mobile 10 on it and am about to start
downloading my cd's to my computer. If I save my music files onto the
computer at a high quality compression like "wma lossless", is there a way to
transfer them (sync) to my SD card in the PPC running Mobile 10 at a smaller
compression or using less kbps so that more will fit on my SD card, yet I'll
still have the highest quality originals on the computer?

Yeah if you sync from WM10 on the desktop to WM on the PPC, it'll
"transcode" them for you. What that means is it can down-convert to a
range of bitrates from 64kbps to 192kbps (which is effectively
lossless as far as the quality of the sound hardware on a PPC goes).

That bitrate is selectable with a slider, and you can have different
bitrates for your SD card (say, 128kbps) from the built in memory or
main memory (say 64kbps to save space)

The sounds on the PC media player are unaffected by this process.

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the settings once WMP has
converted the file for PPC? I have a couple of TV shows recorded using
Media Center that I want to copy to my PPC, and I started the sync
process without bothering to check any of the settings - d'oh! Of
course it used the highest settings by default, so a 34-minute show is
333 MB, and my card is 512MB. I've converted DVD's before very
successfully at about 125 MB per hour and have been very happy with the
result, so there's no need for 300+ MB for a TV show. So here's the
problem - I changed the settings, to 165 Kbps, but it won't re-convert
the shows. It just tries to copy them again with the old settings.
How do I force it to re-convert the shows to the lower bitrate?

Thanks!
Amanda (eternally grateful for the ability to copy Teletubbies to her
Dell Axim - don't know how we'd ever visit a restaurant with a
two-year-old otherwise!)

Yes I think you can, it's hard to find though. Plug in the device and
let it start sync so MP10 finds it. Now, go to Tools->Options->Devices

Pick your Axim (good choice btw, not too sure about the 2yo tho !) and
have a look at the 'Advanced' button once it's selected. You'll see
'Conversion settings' listed and as bunch of checkboxes.

Under those, you'll see the location where 'transcoded' (converted)
files are stored. It's a cache, similar to your browsers cache, so
it'll hold onto converted files to avoid converting them again.

You can now either go find that file and delete it from the cache, or
use 'Delete Files' to delete all transcoded stuff. Now all you have to
do is remove it from the device itself (use the PPC's file manager
say) and you should be able to set the new conversion settings and
convert it manually.
