i recently installed a asus m4a79 delux mobo&the phenom 940. but my graphus card is a bgf 9800gtx +. I also bought a hd 4870 single card. my question is should i keep the 9800 or would i e better off using the 4870.? the mobo suppots cossfire, and to run that im looking at another hd 4870. i havent oc'd the phenom as yet but plan on it when i get the best graphics. what do u think.

The 4870 should provide a noticeable increase in performance over the 9800GTX+. The difference would be more noticeable while in Vista and playing a supported DirectX 10.1 title due to recent driver optimizations on ATI's part. Though you may not need to run CrossFire presently, which would mainly depend on the resolution of the monitor, having the future option is nice. And since you already purchased the 4870, you may as well give it a go.

Hi james welcome to the forums,
As you can see from the link i am sending to a review of the 9800gtx+ the 4870 is the better card and also as you say it gives you the crossfire option if you wish.

THATS NICE TO KNOW BUT WHEN I OPEND MY BOX THERE WAS NO CD IN THE BOX. AND NO MANULE. I DID DOWNLOAD THE LATEST DRIVERS AND SAVED EM IN A FILE, WILL DOWNLOAD CAYATLIEST NEXT.. WILL THAT WORK?

Reply to james49

You can download then as one from AMD/ATI. If you are not sure tell me your OS (operating system) and i will link you directly to the correct file.
PS dont post in caps it is seen as shouting and rude bu most forum members.

also ati drivers are constantly being tweaked to make them work right. the fact that you have to download recent drivers is a good thing.

sorry about the caps, im running vista ultimate 32 bit, i know i can run 64, but not sure about it.

You want the first set of drivers listed, the ones under Full ATI Catalystâ„¢ Suite (Recommended) Download these drivers and then uninstall the old ones first.

GPU-Z for temperatures and Rivatuner for regulating the fan.
Remove any dust, reapply thermal paste if required.

Just use the new Catalyst driver from ATi and you can set the fan speed with that.

Iam going to sell that card , but first i want to make sure this 4870 hd radon from visiontek is going to work o.k, iam having some trouble downloading atitools. and this card is hot compared to my old bgf 9800gtx+, i only used it for about six or eight months, and it was a good card, but slower than my new one, but then at the same time it was a good card, and nivida has good support, better than ati i think. anyway ill let u know by the 25th of this month, and if i keep the radon ill sell only to u so just wait a few days then send me a contact, ok. ur going to need at least 550watts. buit the card is good and i think i still have the origional disk, any way ull have to download drivers.

Rivatuner works with ATI cards now, not just nVIDIA cards, like it used to. Could try that instead of ATI Tools. Guru3d.com is the source for it.
