Back-Up System - What to do?

I have my own PC with a single WD (VelociRaptor) 300gig drive with Win7. I've used about half this drives capacity. My gf has a laptop with WinXP and I don't recall how much stuff she has on there, but it's less than 200gb.

Anyhow, after we had a major RAID system failure at work, I decided it would probably be a good idea to back up mine and my gf's files at home.

I had been burning select files to DVD for both of us and copying to spare hard drives that I had laying around via a USB interface.

I'm looking for a more regular, compact and easy solution that we can both use. Either one unit or two separate units.

We're just looking to back-up our individual drives (Outlook files, MP3s, videos, docs, etc.). We don't download all that much stuff, but in case of a main drive failure, want to have a back-up of our stuff and the ability to restore the system onto new hard drives if necessary.

Any advice would be appreciated!

An external drive with the Windows 7 backup utility should work fine if your need are simple.
