Budget $12 000.00
Needing 32 cores avg. for a bit of number crunching, heavy cpu loads / low ram loads that can later end up recycled as servers if needed / donated to a university.

Is it worth getting 3x HP DL165 G6 "2435" servers clustered or several clustered pc's with ?? cpu and similar amount of ram ?

I see several dual socket / quad socket motherboards have only 1000mb HT , is this not seriously limiting the cpu's ??

Power consumption is relevant but not much. Compact total space used would be nice.

Suggest about a cage to house the HP's in or a good method to get several clustered pc's alternative neat and tidy / running effectively in a cage or enclosure ?

Suggest about best way to get most bang for the buck.

Thanks for the advise.

have you tried not looking at AMD and looking into intel (personally im an AMD fan)

they have dual LGA1366 motherboards that supports the E5500 series of Xeons (the i7 versions), this would give you 16 cores and 32 threads each (2 would be 32/64)

you could probably make 2 of those off of newegg.com for 12k, especially since it sounds like you don't need a lot of GPU horsepower

4 x Xeon E5530 ~2.2k
4 x 12GB(3x4GB) DDR3-1333 mem ~1.6k
2 x SUPERMICRO MBD-X8DAi-O Dual LGA 1366 ~.7k
2 x PC Power & Cooling Silencer PPCS910 ~.4k

cpu/mem/mobo/psu down and only 5k used
just get cases, hdds, odds, and maybe low power gpus

so you are lokking at 6-7k, so you might be able to get about 4 of these machines
