hey i have a xfx 780i mother board with optical output on board..
i want to use this optical out to connect to my home theater amp for 5.1 sounds on dvd's
i have read some forums but no one is clear, some say that optical can only do stereo

will my optical out do 5.1 sound???? or just 2.0

As far as I know it depends on the program you are using to play DVD's. The full version of Power DVD includes 5.1 surround also Arcsoft Total Media supports 5.1 playback but of the 2 I believe only Power DVD is compatible with Windows Media Center if your planning on using that.
