I have a stock pavillion a1230n with an amd 64 processor. Can I upgrade to a phenom dual core, and do i need to change the mobo as well?

No. According to HP's website:
CPU/Processor
* Socket: 939
* Supports the following processors:
o AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
o Athlon 64 4000+
o AMD Sempron 3200+

 

The AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ would be a dual-core upgrade if you don't have that already.

 

No guarantee at all you can put another motherboard in that case, but that's a starting point.

This motherboard is Socket 939. Phenoms are a different socket.

It should support any Socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 processor. Check that you have the latest BIOS: A8AE-LE

None of those are Socket 939.
