I'm looking to upgrade from an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ (2.2ghz). I have an AM2 motherboard. I don't have much to spend, and I don't really want to switch my motherboard - otherwise I might as well switch to Intel.
I've been looking at things like 7750? that is only around £50 which is perfect, however there may be something better. So what can I upgrade to with an AM2 motherboard?

am3 cpus work with am2+... before you buy anything though, make sure your motherboard bios supports the cpu u want to buy. Phenom II 550 would be a good upgrade though. Look on the motherboard manufacturer's website for cpu support. What brand/model is your mobo?

If you can't afford a Phenom II 550, an Athlon II 250 is also a great processor, noticeably better than the Athlon 7750.

which motherboard do you have? model #?

most am2 mb with bios update will work with am2+ processor.

my old am2 asus m2n32 sli deluxe mb worked with 720 & 940.

In the order I would choose (depending on budget and BIOS):
PhenomII 550
AthlonII 250
Athlon 7750

This is the motherboard I have. From the looks of it, it doesn't support AM2+ at all?

I think the AThlon 7750"kuma" will be good for you.
BTW what things you do on ur pc?

I play games a LOT. The main reason for the upgrade is because I'm unhappy with my FPS in TF2 - a very cpu heavy game. The graphics settings make barely any difference because the CPU is such a bottleneck.

For gaming i think you would need something more than 7750. It will run games decently for a while but it will be obsolete soon.

I think you should save more money and Buy the mobo+Cpu afterwards(since you are tight on budget).

Well, IMHO you should rethink your entire upgrade process.
Very first to do is get rid of that ECS motherboard.
Base all your plans around a new motherboard. (don't buy another ECS board...... :non: )
