Yeah - and they're just like TV ads; I always laugh when they come up with a new funny or particularly clever commercial, because three quarters of the time, I can describe it, but don't have a clue as to what the ^&%$ they were selling! A couple weeks back, I accidentally moused one here somehow, and wound up at someone's hosting site - and, damnit, if I could find it again, their prices and services looked pretty good! But I'm a pretty hard case to sell god to...
Well, it's either because I keep the right Column closed or use Netscape, but the only ads I ever see are a single un-obtrusive one at the top of the page. Oh, and some links at the bottom.
Anyone else offended by Tom's running a flash ad fot the CLDS (church of the latter day saints)?
I reiterate the sign at my front door:
"Peddlers, solicitors, and agents will be chased off at gunpoint; Saints and Witnesses will be killed and eaten!
So exactly how do Saints and Witnesses fall under the category of peddler, solicitor or agent?
They are doing what the the bible says to do, spread the word of God. Witnesses give you their brochures for free and will do bible studies with you for free on their time. Saints will give you a free bible and also do bible studies with you for free, on their time. They also allow you to come to their place of worship for free. They do not pass around donation plates like most other religions.

I hope when Armageddon comes you don't still have that sign on your door, you will be passed up.

They don't; they fall in their own category ("disease vectors" perhaps?), which is arguably worse. I suppose you could consider them agents.
I made it a point some years ago to listen to some of them at length. There seem to be two types, some with whom it is possible to have a rational discussion about their beliefs, and others who are like mindless drones ("A Wrinkle in Time" comes to mind, or that old Landru episode of "Star Trek" ). But, ultimately I have found them to be a waste of time.
FWIW, I am an Objectivist, which is a philosophy, not a religion.
Anyway, I don't see ads. I'm logged in, which cuts some out, and at home I use Firefox with Ad Block+, and at work most ad sites are blocked at the firewall.

Well said!!
All right! Another Randite!
Twelve years of Catholicism + two years of fundamentalism = permanent, devout atheism (with the help of Rand, Dennett, and Dawkins). To quote Giulio Giorelli (Philosophy of Science at the University of Milan) commenting on a Dennett book: "Si, abbiamo un anima. Ma e fatta di tanti piccoli robot". Yes, we have a soul. But it's made of lots of tiny robots.
Three thousand year old myths of goatherds... If I was to pick a set of myths, I'd go with the greeks/romans - their gods whored, gambled, drank - I might be created in their 'image and likeness'! But then, I'm positive I'm not 'created' - seems like I spend ten percent of my time mediating arguments between my frontal cortex, and the ancient, reptillian stuff from my brain-stem; I take alpha and beta blockers to decouple my adrenal responses; I take chemicals to modify my brain neuro-transmitters - and they work!
The petty, vindictive, judeo-christian-muslim god is an embarassment.
A rule: "never adopt a world-view that discourages close examination of its own tenets!"
While it was interesting to find out that, this site not only has ads, but that someone is so insecure in their own beliefs as to be offended by them. I did figure that after 1770 post people would be able to put things in the category they belong in.

Yes, that's true. I accept the reality that people believe in different things and that they might judge me on their basis. As I might on my own basis. But frankly, an ad or a door-knocker doesn't infringe on my rights. Doesn't matter if he's selling candy, cable service or religion. I'm neither forced to buy or to listen.
Nor am I forced to be rude to him. My humanism tells me to live my life properly and not at the expense of others - not because I'd go to hell but because it's the right thing to do.
505090 - are you aware that, in the late eighties or early nineties, Games magazine published a set of precision plans to build your avatar for display in your backyard? It had to be set from a window, at a fairly careful angle and distance, but you could look out your window and see it sitting there, defying reason!
