Hello everybody I have a couple questions I would like to ask the community about setting up Verizon's FiOS internet + cable TV with my own router acting as the gateway.
Starters, I don't have FiOS yet, I plan to buy it in about 2 weeks when I move to my new home. There I plan to receive the 15/5 service and the basic cable. Now the thing is I understand they give you a router, one that handles the MoCA protocol to deliever the TV guide and Video on Demand.
So I asked the Verizon people if I can instead have my router act as the internet gateway, and their router connected to mine via the switch. So after some talking I understand this is called "Eathernet mode/setup" or something like that.
And it means my router has to handle the VoD streaming as well as internet traffic. Thus the data flow for VoD or Guide is FiOS connection ==> my router --> Verizon's router ---> Set-top box ---> TV. The internet data flow is FiOS -- > My router ---> my computer.
My router (the one I want to use as the primary gateway) is a linksys WRT54GL with DD-wrt (latest version) installed. My location is going to be Redmond, WA.
So now my question is how well is Video on demand going to work with that setup? Will there be lag, artifacts, pauses, or is it known the WRT54GL can handle it?
Also, how well does the VoD tend to work under the standard Verizon install?
