The only thing the PSU is powering is one HDD, one DVD drive, a GTX 260 core 216, and of course the essential components. They only take up 350w out of the 550 allotted.

question is, does that mean i can use a GTX 295? or i have to give up and get a supplementary PSU or an entirely new PSU?

A 295 would be pushing it. It would probably work.. But IMO I would upgrade the PSU.

Specs reccomend a 650W with at least 46A to the card. With 550W to play with you only have a THEORETICAL max of about 46A (less in practice).... So I wouldn't even risk killing the card with that PSU.

I'd get a 650watt PSU at the minimum, and a 750watt PSU just to be safe, since a GTX295 is two GTX260s, which is very power hungry.

It would be much simpler and safer to get a bigger and better PSU. why would you spend all that money on a GTX295 and skimp on the PSU? it doesnt make any sense.

So I take it your mobo isn't SLi?

Yea, it's an AMD AM3 Gigabyte Phenom II mobo, so obviously it's not SLI, but however,
i can do two Nvidia cards in GPU+Physx mode (one for GPU, one for Physx)

and i have a GTX 260 at the moment, but i'm considering my upgrade options, so that's what i'm asking you guys for.

anyway, is the supplementry PSU mentioned above good or no?

Yep it will work...but you could probably get a psu strong enough to push your whole system for 100$...
