I have currently built a new PC..
The specs are:
Intel Q8400 2.66GHz CPU
EVGA GeForce 9800GTX+ GPU
RAIDMAX 630Watt PSU
Seagate 250GB 7200RPM HDD
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P MOBO
2x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 1066MHz RAM

Ok so this PC build I want to be mostly for gaming..

I was wondering if I should go ahead and replace the Q8400 with a Q9550 or a Q9650?
Or should I just save up to be able to build a new i7 rig and just get an i7, new mobo and ram? If i were to upgrade to the Q9550 or Q9650 it would be within the next month... but saving for an i7 rig would be within the next 3-4 months probably..

If choosing either the 9550 or the 9650 I would probably go for 9550 because i'm not sure if the 9650 would be worth the extra 100 buks and an i7 920 is only 280 buks.. =/

Just wanted to know what you guys though I should do in this situation..

Well, considering that LGA775 will soon be outdated I recommend that you upgrade to an I7 setup if the funds allow. For I7, anything over 920 is a waste of money. For LGA775, anything over Q9550 is a waste of money, except if you really don't know the basics of overclocking (if it is hard for you to just go to the BIOS and increase the multiplier a bit).

Goddamnit LGA775 is hardly dead and the high end quad cores (what he is considering) perform quite close to i7 anyway. His RAM and graphics card kick ass so there's no real reason to go i7. That mobo can do 1600MHz FSB so it would be an excellent idea to get a Q9550 and you'll only need to overclock it slightly to reach the speed of a Q9650 and beyond.

@JBoi that config looks very good to me...
Can you give the specific reason why do you want to upgrade to Q9550/ change to i7 ?

And considering that the i5 is coming, I wouldn't update till then. You have a quad, 4GBs of ram, and a 9800GTX+ This isn't a bad setup for gaming. I personally would get rid of the Raidmax PSU (junk) and add more harddrive space, but thats just me. If your looking to upgrade, wait for the i5 to come out. Performance should be close to the i7, or even exceed it in turbo mode. It should also be a lot cheaper.

Agreed. Q8400 is close to mid to upper end in quad core performance, especially when overclocked. Get a good air cooler and learn to overclock.
