MaximumPC managed to get a 3TB drive to boot.

Why do they need the raid card if the BIOS does support booting from a 3TB drive?

According to this Anandtech article it's because Intel's ICH chipset drivers don't support 64-bit LBAs and therefore the motherboard SATA controller won't work with drives larger than 2TB (at least not in SATA mode).
