So I am ignorant (I admit it) about what to do - I need
a large size monitor for two things - 1) Text editing,
as in programmer, using notepad or other editors that need
really good crisp clear text that scrolls nice and easy,
and 2) grayscale image editing, where you have a white
background and varying degrees of gray to black lines
and arcs driven by teh program - near perfect geometry
and clean black on white background is a MUST, as the
images are large and a lot of scrolling is needed and
any distortions while scrolling up and down or right
and left is not acceptable.

So, I thought aperture grill
was out of the question because those two horizontal
lines would confuse the editing of the gray-scale images,
right? Or do they make an apergure grill where those
lines are so faint, against a white background, that
it wouldn't confuse the images I am editing, which
sometimes use faint gray lines and arcs for editing.

But, I find negative reviews for all
the shadow masks I have found
available so far. What to do? Another thing - I just
returned the Viewsonic VG191 becuase it flickered when
I scrolled, but, otherwise, it was a perfect solution
for my needs. And I got headaches trying to get a refund,
so, I want to avoid any more trouble - I don't need any
more "returns" and I don't want to be "patient" while
they fix whatever is wrong with my new monitor I get
by mail order. Local dealers only have cheap cheap 21"
models (MAGIC - $330), so I am styfled here - what to do.
Any advice is appreciated. Is there any place in the US
where I can go (as in drive from the north Texas area),
and see in person how a monitor will look for my purposes
BEFORE I part with the money (this DELL/Viewsonic thing
really burned me)?
Have car, will travel.

I have a 21" Eizo T960 at home (out of production now), and the newer 21" Eizo T965 at work. Both are the best monitors I have ever used. Both uses trinitron CRTs which has two inherent horizontal lines. But they never annoys me. They are relatively easy to see on a bright background, but they are so thin that you have to look directly at them before you actually notice them.
Unfortunately Eizo monitors are very expensive.

How about looking into an LCD, they have REALLY clear text, and even though they may not display colors perfectly, they will display grey shades. Thaey also have perfect geometry which also fits your requirements. They dont have any problems with lines such as the trinitrons etc.

My sig's faster than yours, and it overclocks better too....

You need a really big wallet to find an LCD that does 1600*1200. Further most have some blurring effects trailing moving objects. This can get really annoying when gaming.
