I've just bought an i7 with Asus P6T and Xiggy Dark Knight. It's my first build.

If I apply thermal paste to the entire surface of the CPU do I still have to apply it to the heat sink as well?

Thanks.

Get some rubbing alcohol, 70% will work but 90%+ is best, and get the thermal paste off the CPU. Then spread the thermal paste in a small film over the heat sink, making sure that all the crevices are filled and the aluminum has almost no thermal paste of its own, zero thermal paste if you can. The way you did it wont work.

you can spread it on the CPU or heatsink but not both. With thermal paste, less is usually more.

Check out this article:

Best Thermal Paste Application Methods

I used the double-line method described in the article with my quad core and I'm happy with the temps using the Xigmatek Dark Knight.

As ct1615 said, don't apply to both CPU and heatsink. That will increase the chance of air pockets in the paste.

Just the CPU will do, there are alot of methods too for applying it.
