Wifi one lane sata bus

I have an I-mac and see it has an internal wifi card that connects to a one lane pci express bus. Could I remove that card and, with a SATA-pci express adapter, plug in a SATA hard drive? I might have to modify the case and run the sata cable outside to the hard drive, but that works for me.
