Yup, this is the card I want to bear my children.

Very impressive, ATI has done an excellent job, though, I wonder what'll happen to the HD 4850. I see almost no reason to buy it, anymore.

*Edit/Addition*

Now that I've read the whole thing, I'm very happy. Earlier it was calculated that the ROP, TMU, and Shader power of the HD 4770 was almost exactly equal to the HD 4850, and I figured it was limited by bandwidth a little. Page 11 of the review is their overclocking, and memory on 3 cards all hit 1050 on memory, which gives it greater bandwidth than the stock HD 4850. Overclocked, it also scored ~20% higher on Vantage, so, this could be right even with the HD 4850 when BOTH are overclocked. (stock 4850 showed 8367, 4770 stock showed 8086, overclocked 4770 was 9989, ~15% higher than the HD 4850)

And no one believed me when I said the 4770 would replace the 4850, and the 4750 will replace the 4830........

Yes, this will be a great card. The non-reference cards will probably be the best, especially ones with the HIS IceQ cooler on them :D.

I thought that all along!!!

Although, the HD 4850 will probably still remain for awhile, but it might be phased out in the next couple months.

If the 4770's price goes any lower than $99, it will destroy both the 4850 and the GTS 250. Heck, it will probably destroy them anyway.

I don't think the 4770's price will drop from $99 for awhile. I mean, it already kills on price/performance, and brings lower power consumption than the HD 4850/9800GT(X+).

Really, it's performance is close enough to almost consider it equal to them, yet it wins out on price, temperature, and power usage.

I've gotta say, it's probably
HD 4770 >~ HD 4850
HD 4770 >~ 9800GTX+
HD 4770 > HD 4830
HD 4770 > 9800GT

The 4770 is about to own the GTS 250/4850 and down. XD

Reply to boudy

???

The reviews said the 4770 is 6% behind the 4850.

How does it own the 4850?

The 4850/GTS250 is around $130, and the 4770 is around $99.

Yeh, price per performance is better, but it doesn't exactly own the 4850.

But price for performance wise, the 4830 for $75 is also up there, just as good as the 4770 when all things considered.

Hey this is only a sneak peak of whats to come around the corner with some excelent price/performance and the compitition will become fierce next round :pt1cable:

Personally i dont expect this cards price to do anything but go up. Given its performance, unless they, shops etc have got rid of the backlog i can only see the 4830/4850 getting sold off cheaper than the 4770 which means the price will go up to facilatate this with the 4830/4850 probably going down a bit, sort of six of one etc. Remember the 4830 is only bad 4850/4870 chips at the end of the day, unless the reviews i saw were wrong about that. So these cards will be about as long as the 4870 i sat least.

On the review im dissapointed that the eletist thing has returned as far as the resolution used to test is concerned. No 19" screen, come on there are lots of people out there me included who are planning to put this cardon a 19" screen to maximise FPS and quality. Guess we will wait for a review from the usual parties.

It was a severe exaggeration in order to get people to post. ;)
And looks like you fell for it :D.

I wouldnt consider the 4830 "up there", if it was just as good, it wouldnt be replaced by the 4770.

Reply to boudy

Its being replaced (the 4830) for a couple of good reasons.
1. the 4830 isnt really a card in its own right its just a way of using up defective 4850/4870 chips.
2. While there is nothing wrong with this the 4770 is specifically made for this performance sector and has the added benefit of being cheaper to produce.
3. Its called progress, sometimes we have to go backwards to go forwards, just so happens we are kinda standing still this time.

"I dont see Nvidia having an answer except for dropping the 250gts to the same price point, at which point ATI will just drop the 4770 lower. I reckon it will be within 5% of a 4850/9800gtx in performance, possibly even faster than a 4850."

Also, I sorta agree with what Mactronix is saying, if not with everything.

The market has been crying out for a replacement for the 8800gt for the past year. The 4830 was good enough, but also not good enough. A little bit faster for AMD isn't good enough to dislodge a card like the 8800gt from it's deserved perch.

The 4770 redefines the $99 market. It is so much better than the 8800gt that buying an 8800gt at a similar price is madness.

If we can get such a powerful card as this for only $99, what price will the high-end 40nm cards be at? :o

Reply to boudy

It depends really on whether or not ATI want to release a full set of 40nm r700's.

How close is r800? It's just too difficult to say. I don't see any good reason why ATI couldn't already release a much faster 40nm gpu than the 4770. It's just a cut down 4870 after all, the watts are incredible and i can't see the heat being any worse than the 4870 is already.

This will make a great card to connect to a 720p TV for gaming and HTPC use. Well, the non-reference cooler models may be better for this.

Reply to San Pedro

^ Thats the other thing, non-reference cooler models. Im kinda tempted to wait for these models.
Usually i wait for His to release an IceQ version before i buy, others are using similar coolers that vent out the back as well these days though.
Oh well i guess if the usual reviews call it a stonker then i can live with a standard fan :pt1cable:
