I have a maxtor 100 gig external hard drive that powers up but is not noticed by my computer anymore. The only thing that it does is it makes a very soft clicking sound (but you have to put it to your ear to hear it!) it's always was on and plug into the usb port in back and after about 2yrs. it just stop responding! NEED HELP all my music on it which is the whole 100 gigs. can this be fixed!

Try it on a different PC. If that doesn't work, try removing the drive from the enclosure and hooking it up internally to rule out that the enclosure isn't the problem.

+1 for this post.

Almost every broken external I have had to look at so far had the enclosure it self break down and the drive inside was still usable.
