so I just built this file server and im using ubuntu with samba on it for a couple of share drives for file shareing/backup
and its in my room and the hard drives are kinda old and very noisy, so noisy in fact that it loader than my gaming machine.
and the drives are old so and they get pretty hot so i want to know if there is a program that will spin down my drives during idle, and spin them back up when me or anyone else in the house is accessing files via the drives. im running the latest ver. of ubuntu and would much prefer if the software is free. if im gonna have to spend money then ill just but a quieter HDD. :)

I'm not actually sure about whether or not it's persistent to be honest. Easy enough to check :)  If it isn't, it'd be easy enough to write a quick shell script and set it up to run at boot :)
