Will turning off the powerstrip (after shutting down) have any negative effect on the mobo? I've read that the bios will reset to default for some boards when not plugged in. My main concern would be that I'm messing up the battery or shortening life. Is tuning off the powerstrip generally not recommended?

It should definitely shorten the battery's life. Why would you turn off the power strip on a regular basis? To save a few pennies on your power bill?

Worst case, assume you *never* used the computer but left it plugged in:

5W*24hrs*365/1000 = 43.8 kwh * $0.10 = $4.38 per year.

Of course, after cap and trade goes through, it'll be more like $7.50 . . . but still.

Losing configuration settings is what the OP might be concerned with.

OK. So you replace it every three or four years - assuming you keep the computer that long instead of every 6 or 7 years.

The first sign that a CMOS battery is failing is that the computer starts forgetting the date and time in which case you turn on the powerstrip (powering the standby power supply), leave the case switch off, and change the battery.

The OP wrote "My main concern would be that I'm messing up the battery or shortening life.". We both agree that the answer to that question is yes.
