Pictures wont copy to CDRW or dvd rw

i have just tried for first time on my new pc to copy some pictures from a usb sick onto a cd so i can send it to family member.
done hundreds of times with older pcs,but for some reason with this new one it doesnt work. when i click copy to cd it looks to be working, but after a few seconds a error display pops up saying windows was unable to complete the format.
please can someone advise. lie i say i have copied to cds and rw loads of times in past, but for some reason it not working now. i am running windows 7.
