My Dell owners manual says it is upgradeable to 4 GB. I tried to upgrade. It has 4 slots and 2 are filled with 512 MB chips. I have 2 identical chips but the BIOS does not recognize them, and says that memory (and CPU) are "unchangeable". Is there a way to correct this. I have flashed the BIOS and reset the CMOS but it does not recognize the 2 new chips, and still says "unchangeable".
Crucial has a memory configurator and guarantees it's memory to work, or you can return them. Newegg charges a 15% restocking fee; frys stores don't charge anything to return within 15 days. Dell boards may be picky about it's memory configuration or brand. Try the new ones alone without the original 512 sticks.

I have changed the sticks around. They are identical. They work in slots 1 and 3 and are not recognized in slots 2 and 4. I think the BIOS has some kind of a lock built in. It says that the memory (and CPU) are unchangeable. But the owners manual says both are upgradeable. Like I said, I've flashed the BIOS to the latest, and cleared the CMOS, but get the same message, "unchangeable"!
