Why would anyone use stupid software like gaurdian edge when seagate has self encrypting disks? I have to encrypt all laptop disks since I work for the gubment.
Gaurdian Edge must be a typo; but generally you should trust REAL encryption over 'embedded hardware encryption'.
Self-encrypting disks is nice for someone who steals your laptop, but not good enough for REAL threats. Have a look at XST, GBDE if you want real protection. On Windows the most advanced at your disposal may be 'TrueCrypt', possibly combined with 'Eraser'; a free open source free-space-destruction utility.
