I just checked My Catalyst control centre thing, and apparently, the GPU temp is 76 C with no activity. I don't know much about hardware, but is that dangerous? Because it seems quite high, I am rocking a HD 4850 stock btw.

More about : gpu temps

Yes, that is too hot for idle, even for ATI cards.

Manually set the fan to 70% or higher. Or download rivatuner and use the dynamic fan settings.

Also make sure your fan is working properly.

It's different for every card type, and different for every card model (of the sametype) depending on the manufacturer.

For the 4850, idle is usually in the high 60s (ie 68-69'C)

Comparably, for the 9800GTX, idle is 60'C while the GTX+ is 55'C

Companies that have good coolers or aftermarket coolers on their cards are usually 5-10'C less than the average

I beg to differ on the 9800 GTX, my friend owns one and his idles @ 40-45c, overclocked even. My GTX 260 has similar temps, its sitting @ 42c right now running Superclocked speeds.

Of course you are running your 9800's in SLI so they would run warmer. 60 is pretty high for a single 9800GTX sitting idle. Of course the room temperature can affect it as well.

My SLI BFG 9800GTX+ OC ran 40-45 c idle 30% fan .. never pass 60c load @ 60% fans.

My BFG GTX285 OC2 : 40c idle and 60-65c load @ 65% fan

I owned an EVGA 9800GTX+ SC before the BFG and the EVGA was Hotter. 50 idle and 70 load.

Ok, I've decided to leave it at automatic, it should be able to adjust itself according to the temps, so would that be ok? Cos I checked there and it said only 50 C at idle, so meh. I've survived like this for months anyway.
