Are they members of the same workgroup? And are there any firewalls installed?

Have you set up static IP addresses? If not setup one PC as 192.168.0.1 and the other as 192.168.0.2

If you still get nothing use the winXP network setup wizard, and save the settings to a floppy to transfer to the Win 98 PC, it usually works.

Jesus, don't use the network wizard.
Are you using Network Places/Neighborhood as your only browsing tool. Mistake. Pitiful network software. Search by computer name and then IP if that doesn't work. Then say you can't see any shares if they don't show up. Or use the UNC path from the run box or explorer. ex \\computername\sharename You can also map, either by computer name or IP. Lots of ways to get to resources in windows. Network Places is probably the LEAST dependable.
