Hey guys! I'm looking to buy a new computer since my last one just died. It lasted five years, so it really was time anyway. I built this custom computer from Dell, and I was hoping that the experts here would help me out to know if it's a powerful gaming comp for under $1,000. I really appreciate the insight and if it looks good, I'll probably buy it in a couple of days.

Here are the specs:

Dell Studio Desktop

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q9650 (12MB L2, 3.00GHz, 1333FSB)
OS: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-Bit
Memory: 8GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 2DIMMs
Hard Drive: 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache
Optical Drive: Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW w/ dbl layer write capable
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 9800GT
Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Monitor: Westinghouse 22" HD widescreen

I'm looking to play Crysis, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and Empire: Total War. Will this set up be able to play those games, specifically Crysis, on high settings?

That will easy play those games. I know crisis you might have some problems. For crysis you might want to upgrade the card to an ati 4870, or 4890, or nvidia 260, 270 285. I do not know what dell has on there site. Also you are going to get a bunch of people saying build it yourself, sometimes its a good idea if you have the time, to learn and do it :)

That can probably play all of those titles...but if you build it yourself and the money you save on not having dell build it etc you could probably buy a card to max those games out and not one that might max them out...

Build it yourself

1. DO NOT BUY A GAMING COMPUTER FROM DELL

2. Build it yourself from Newegg components

3. Buy prebuilt computers from Digital Storm

4. or try hit-or-miss (but very good deal) companies such as Cyberpowerpc/Ibuypower

5. If you decide to build it yourself from Newegg parts, I suggest you go with an i7 processor. The i7 920@ 2.66GHz is slightly better than the Q9650 while being $50 cheaper.

GTX260, HD4870, HD4830
