Hey
I switched on my computer this morning and found the display looking wierd. The thing is, my resolution is set to 1680 x 1050, but its actually 1400 x 1050. (this is what the moniter says)......I tried reinstalling my ATI driver, no help.....its set to the native resolution, but dont know why is displaying 1400 x 1050.

My moniter is a 22" Viewsonic, ATI 4850 Card.

I'm using Vista x64.

Please help.

Go into the display manager in CCC and change your refresh rate to 60hz. After that you should be able to select 1680x1050 again.

My refresh rate is already 60Hz. And its not that I cant select 1680x1050. I can select it, but even when selected, the resolution is 1400x1050 (which is not an option)

Can you use the force button in CCC to force 1680x1050?

I tried. The thing is, CCC shows that the resolution is 1680x1050. But the monitor shows 1400x1050 abd the screen looks weird, thus the resolution definitely isnt 1680x1050.

Not sure what is going on here, I assume you've tried powering it off at the wall and have made sure the dvi/dsub connector at the back is properly attached.

Have you tried using your monitors recall option in the on-screen display?

I tried the monitor recall option, and the connector is plugged in just fine. What do you mean powering it off at the wall?

I mean unplugging it from the power source. Leave it off for 20 seconds or so then plug it back in. It's a long shot tbh but I was pretty much out of ideas after the refresh rate didnt work anyway.

Do you have another monitor you can check on your pc so you can narrow it down to either a monitor, gpu or software issue?

OK I plugged it out and after 5 minutes plugged it back in.....no help

I dont have any other monitor.

Use Driver sweeper to remove drivers, then install latest ones.

OK so I reinstalled windows.....no help
I connected my monitor to my integrated card, installed the drivers, I set the resolution to 1680x1050.......still the monitor displays 1400x1050
I connected it to my friends laptop....set the resolution to 1680x1050....still the monitor displays on 1400x1050.....
So could it be the monitor?

Well, when I reinstall windows and first only the integrated graphics works, my monitor displays at 1024 x 768 or so. Only after I install the Catalyst drivers do I get full 1440 x 900 resolution. And what do you mean "integrated card"?

Based on that I'd say it's 100% the monitor yes. Did you try your friends cable though? It could be your dvi cable, hopefully.

Check your PC for trojan / virus. I had a somewhat similar issue with my NEC 2690WUXi, at native resolution everything looked distorted. I had to force 1920 x 1080 for everything to look clear.

I was troubleshooting for about two weeks, and although AVGfree said my PC was clean, for some reason I could not shake the feeling that it was trojan / virus related.

I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, did a scan an sure enough I had a trojan / virus. Malwarebyte was able to delete it and my issue disappeared so I was able to use 1920 x 1200 native resolution again.

Well I formatted my PC....so I dont think its a virus problem....the cable is fine
I'm thinking its a firmware issue....all resolutions can be set, except the native one (1680x1050). I can even set 1600x1200.

That's most likely a display driver problem. My 1440 x 900 monitor after reinstalling OS and before installing display drivers behaves the same way. There is a 1600 x 1200 option, but no 1440 x 900.

I'm having the exact same problem with my ATI mobile 1400X in my laptop. I had used my 1680 X 1050 secondary display for 2 years before now with no problems. I moved and had the second display in storage for 7 months. I pulled it out today and bam it won't display 1680 X 1050. Does anyone think that it could be an update to Vista or ATI in the past few months that is buggy?
