I recently bought Xeon x3350 and Asus Striker II Formula for a bargain price, and obviously, I'm a gamer. This is the first time I have such an advanced motherboard and I have a dilema. Do I use ddr2 mem 800 or 1066? Which would be better for games and my quad CPU and my GTX 285 GPU? And last, I went to asus.com site to read some compatibility article and I'm ashamed to say I don't understand: dual channel doesn't work with all RAM memory? I was told when I bought the motherboard that if I buy any good memory 800 or 1066 4GB or 8GB I can setup dual channel easy, and now I read different on ASUS site? Can someone tell me exactly what RAM(brand and model) do I have to buy to set up dual channel on this MBO? Price range <= 100$! Thank you very much for your help!
I have this board and have had nothing but trouble with it since i bought it in Jan last year. Q6600 CPU, 4x1GB Crucial 1066 SLi Mem. (2x 2x1GB matched kits)
You can only use SLi memory (well, the features of it) if it is 2 sticks only, chipset restriction.
I have RMA'd 3 lots of RAM that have failed over a period of 3-6 months on this board. Now one of the NiCs has also died. I suspect there maybe a voltage regulation problem so hopefully your board will behave better. Although i have 1066 RAM i cannot run it above 800MHz or the POST will fail with all 4 slots occupied.
There are a lot of posts on various boards concerning NVidias chipsets and filling all 4 slots, especially using 8GB so i wouldn't advise trying it. If you do, then you may need to up the voltage and lower the timings on the RAM. Also, if you have everything set to auto from reading the EPP, check them against the spec sheet of the RAM as they don't always get things right.
If i could start again with info i have now, i would order a 2x2GB kit of 1066 SLi Memory.
