Hello Everyone,

I am upgrading my pc and was confused if I should go for i7 or core 2 quad.

I currently have the following -

- Intel Pentium D 3GHZ
- 325 GB HDD (almost full so i m out of space)
- Intel motherboard (945GNT maybe)
- Geforce 8500GT
- Sound blaster Audi 2
- TV Tuner card
- 2 GB RAM
-450 watt power supply
- thats all i can remember

Now i7 would cost (incl motherboard) around $580 where I live. And that is no joke. Whereas a core 2 quad with a decent motherboard should cost approx $380. (Again thats an estimated price).

I usually use my pc for a bit of software dev (.net) and gaming. I am not a hardcore gamer but ya I do like to play latest pc games on my pc.

I will also upgrade my graphics card as well, but that not the topic of discussion right now.

What do you guys suggest ? Is it really worth going for i7 or should core 2 quad do the job for next several years.

Please tell me what to do.

Thank you,

Jack

there are still just a few applications that can see a real benefit of quad CPUs. i7 is also a quad cpu. the thing is, i7 is in its own class, its by far the best cpu on the market, and it will stay on the top for quite a while. actually, there was no real need for a cpu like this one, intel probably released it just to show their power.
so a quad cpu will do the same job as i7, but for far less money.

maybe u should wait till after september, cause there are new CPUs comming out, i5 and i3 (they are the now quad CPUs, just re-branded), a new socket and a new chipset (p55). this will drop prices a lot. i think its worth waiting.

thanks for the info jimishtar. I dunno if i can wait for too long. I mean though new processors would be out in september and by the time price is reflected in my country etc it may take an additional month or so. (I reside outside US).

I was thinking for core 2 duo 3GHZ. I did some research and found that quad cores and not used well by apps. Most of softwares and games still use the single core / dual core approach so I dunno if quad core would be beneficial right now.

What do you say? If you think core 2 duo 3GHZ is okay, can you give tell me which motherboard to go for? Do you think intel motherboards are better than gigabyte or asus etc.

Thanks.
