Why wont windows xp backup file open

Hi everyone, I have a WD 300g external hdd which i only use for backing up photos but for some reason I cant access the drive and says the data is raw, I've tried a couple of different data recovery programs and nothing at all seems to work, I can recover my backups but when i go to restore things out of them it says there are no entries but yet the backup file size is the same as what it was when i created it..... If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Apparently, the Drive was never formatted to ntfs or fat file system before using it for backup. Suggest you start searching for recovery software for RAW file system

I did try that but to no avail, the backups had previously worked and i could restore certain things at my leisure, but now that i've tried to recover the it claims no entries...
