Hiya! :)
Id really appreciate any help you can give me. I have read many stickys/guides etc on how to overclock an i7 to 4Ghz but i am still cant get my head around it. I have overclocked an AM3 before (955 from 3.2 to 3.8) and thought i could do the same with an i7..but apparently not.
This is my spec :)
CPU: i7 950 (h50 cpu cooler)
Mobo: p6x58d-e
RAM: OCZ 4Gb 1333Mhz Gold (duel channel)
GPU: 5870
PSU: XFX 850W

What ever i do i just get BSOD after about 15mins of prime95. I have tried many combinations 175BCLK*23 200*20 etc and nothing seems to work. I have even upped the CPU voltage to 1.35 but nothing seems to work. Where i am a bit hazy in my OC knowledge is the way the ram overclock with the cpu. My ram runs at 1333 (stock) so should i be aiming to keep it at 1333 (or as near as possible)
At the moment it can end up around 16000 or even higher. Also the amount of settings you can change. Pll, QPI etc It just goes over my head a little.
I have even tried some ‘template’ settings but I’m not sure what to twiddle with tbh to get it to work. I have seen SO many on these boards say how easy it was to get to 4Ghz without ever trying. Is there something wrong with the chip or board? ><
Seriously can anyone give ANY advice.

P.s lol if you help me get a stable 4Ghz 10,000G is yours on hellscream EU server ;) ..or 3,000G on eonar EU.

Hi,

Sorry I can't help with your problem yet however I intend to overclock my setup which is a

asus p6x58d-e
i7 950 with arctic freezer 7 cooler

However I wanted to make sure the cooling is all sorted first before i give it a go. Asus Probe II monitoring app reports that idle temp is 40C and under load it goes up to 84c!! Using a variety of other apps report completely different temperatures and worryingly all higher than those reported by Probe II. Please could you tell me what temps you are getting at stock CPU settings. If i can get this cooling thing sorted i will have a go with clocking and let you know my success, or failure!

Thanks

Paul

I'm running a similar setup with :
asus p6x58d
i7 950
Corsair H70 water cooler.
Overclocking at 3.2 ghz will give me temps of 38c idle, and 71c on full load.
The h70 is ok and probably a bit better than an after market air cooler but not as good as a full water loop, but only a fraction of the price.

I've had my system since Nov 2010, finally decided to overclock to just 3.8GHz, Ran Prime95 for an hour and seemed Ok and passed. Its been couple of days and seem stable when working on it. SpeedStep enabled.

Temp on Prime95 Torture 100% Cpu High 70;66;67;64

CPU Ratio Setting 21
BCLK 181
Automatically set my DRAM Frequency to 1451
CPU Voltage 1.23750 (BSOD so increased by .00625)
Dram Bus Volatge 1.65
Load-LIne Calibration -- Enabled

Asus P6x58D-e
i7-950 Scythe Mugen 2 cooler
3 x 2GB Corsair 1600MHz 1.65V 9-9-9-24
Asus GeForce ENGTX460 1GB
2 x WD 640GB Black SATA on RAID 0
WD 1TB SATA III
other externals
Corsair 750TX 750 Watt

I hope it helps as a reference. Good Luck
