I added a 1 gig memory stick (DDR400/PC3200) to a computer that already had one slot filled with a 512 MB stick.

Will the fact that the 2 memory sticks are different brands present any issues? And does it make any difference which slot has the larger memory size?

Depends. Some times it will work perfectly fine, other times it will not. Download Memtest86+ and test over night. If it fails, you have problems if not you'll be fine most likely.
