Network Password on laptop running Windows 7

I am trying to link my iPhone 3GS to a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 ultimate. The phone recognises the laptop but asks for a password to connect. I have gone into all the suggestions but they require the laptop to connect to a home network before I can get into the advanced settings that are supposed to give me the password. Is there another way to find it?

Will the iPhone not support ad-hoc networking -- ie sending data from one computer to another (rather than infrastructure which implies using a router) ? Because it's only a temporary link, I've noticed most people don't bother with wireless security on ad-hoc.
