Can O/S cause hdd smart

My HP Mini 1001TU PC having windows XP Home OS was causing problem in start up. I formatted the hdd and load XP Pro, after new installation an error screen comes S.M.A.R.T. HDD bad. The hard drive is Toshiba PATA MK6028GL 60GB. What I feel that drivers for HDD in new os are not supporting the toshiba pata hdd as disk management tools shows the hdd health 100%. Am I right and should I reload the previous os?

More about smart
  1. The smart values are stored in the drive, not the OS. Download hdtune and check the smart values manually. If your motherboard is reporting a smart error, there is a good chance at least one of the smart values is out of spec.
