ive been sold a nvidia 9500gt 1gb ram is it tru that this is only worth it with large monitors that need 1gb ram to do 1600 by 900 res?

Yes higher amounts of ram are only really needed whan gaming at higher resolutions 1920 x 1200 is typically where it becomes usefull.
The 9500GT isnt powerfull enough to take advantage of this though. Adding more cheap Ram to a card is a marketing ploy.
It may be usefull for intensive image eddditing as well i guess but im not 100% sure on that.
