Hi guys. I recently installed a i7 920 D0 stepping with a xigmatek dark knight. This is based in an Antec 300. My idle temps are in the high 40s and my load temperature is in the high 60's without ever passing 70. The temperatures were monitored using realtemp and coretemp and the load was done using prime95. Do I need to reseat my dark knight with these temperatures? I'm running stock settings and the ambient temperature is 29-30.

I dont know much about intel CPUs or the 920. But Idle in the high 40s seems sort of high, but for a nice, fast cpu like that, it might not been unusual.

Here's a review of the DK with a i920 at stock and OC'd with room temperature at 25C:

You could expect 5C higher across the board because you are at 30C.

I'd take the case side off, and run again. If the temperatures then fall in the range of the review +5C, your problem is removing hot air from the case. I doubt they will drop far enough, but it is worth testing before going further.

Then I'd re-seat the heat sink if necessary.

Yeah, it looks like I'll need to reset the dark knight.... I'm having trouble finding a good way to apply the thermal paste honestly. I tried the Anandtech way for HDT coolers this time, what should I try next?

Trial and error lol. I use three parallel lines about 1/2" long, twice as wide as a grain of rice, centered and spaced nicely on the heat sink.

I just put on a rubber glove, or just my finger, put a good amount on the cpu, and smear it around very evenly.

I heard this way isnt very good for the HDT coolers.

Ok, but nothing is wrong with a perfectly even coat of thermal paste.

If you add the word "thin", I'd tend to agree.
