I'm putting together a build for my old man for a max $500 (EDIT $600)dollar budget. heres the info and what i've got so far.

Will run XP and probably never upgrade

Doesn't play any games, as such i want mobo w/ onboard graphics.

will probably use this computer for around 8 years into the future

main goal is to keep it cheap and quiet

now, onto the build! ***UPDATED***

This HDD is faster due to higher platter density:

Faster ram:

Get a SATA DVD Drive:

Cheaper quality case:

Why the floppy drive?

SO if you want this to last 8 years...then you should probably drop a Quad core in there in a couple years, that E5200 is somewhat sluggish already, so in 8 years it will be agonizing. Wait for the Q9650 to become the low-end mainstream and put it in, the E5200 will do for now.

The xthekidx changes make a lot of money sense as well as performance.
The 5200 will suffice for about 3-4 years for his usage but the platform will not.
Prices for old technology seem to go up 3-4x the normal price once they are being discontinued
(socket 775 will disapear before he has a chance to upgrade to a quality quad)
