I was planning to get myself Phenom II x4 940 with GA-MA790X-UD4P.
But looking at the price on newegg i realised i can try going for x4 955 on AM3 instead.

Now it doesn't look like there is significant performance difference.
The only benefit is having DDR3 and socket AM3 (Well ok. GA-MA790X-UD4P can take socket 3 processors but without DDR3 on the long run that sounds like a waste.)

So do you think it's worth the difference? And does DDR3 really make sense to go with at this point (price difference seems to be low now)

Usage: (Some gaming, office, some web development stuff. video plan to get gtx 260 216. no sli yet.)

As of today newegg.
phenom II x4 940 - 174
GA-MA790X-UD4P - 109
G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066 - 49.99
with discount they have on combo total is 334

Phenom II x4 955 - 210
GA-MA790XT-UD4P - 129
G.SKILL 4GB DDR3 1333 - 64.99
Total - 404

So we talking about 70$ difference.
What do you think?

That new board you pointed to will support a 140W just in case and be cheaper also.

OTOH I just saw this combo... a 955 with the 790GP motherboard but even CHEAPER: (And a rebate if you want to mail it in.)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.212580

Price after rebate for CPU and MB: $255.00 which is $85 cheaper than what you originally pointed to.

(Meaning you'd pay MORE for the second MB you pointed to....)

AMDs next generation of Desktop CPUs won't have a DDR2 controller so they won't work in AM2/AM2+ boards. While the phenom II will be with us for a while, chances are when you want to upgrade again those new CPUs will be out and will only work in an AM3 board. You may as well go AM3 if you can.

I know the board you are talking about, but overall most of the things i read about that series of asus board and 790gx chipset combination doesn't look good to me (Bad audio, overheat for some people, significant number of burned boards and doa which is strange for asus. Combo is good but there is nothing in this board that make me want to take it. But still thanks for pointing it out. Might help someone else.
