New to SSD, what should I use?

Hello all,

I am currently working on building a new computer and am contemplating getting a SSD to use as my boot drive and a few other programs. The problem is I know nothing about SSD nor how to go about setting them up on a new build.

Here is my part selection so far:

This will be a mostly gaming rig, but I will also be doing 3D modeling and most of what Adobe CS4 offers for school. I would like to get a SSD that is around 120gb so that I can run my OS, Maya, CS4, Office, and maybe a few other things off of it.

Since the motherboard I am getting has SATA III I was looking at getting:
Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I believe as of right now that is my only option for SATA III, but I have heard that there may be some others coming out next year. So is this my best option? Is there something better for what I plan on doing? Should I wait and see what will be coming in the future? How different is it setting up a new build with a SSD?

Consider the new DF-85 over the older 1200. It takes about 6-8 minutes to clean the fan intake filters on the 1200 ... 6 -8 seconds on the DF-85. DF also has SATA back plane allowing you to swap out HD's and SSD's w/o touching any cables. And, yes, it fits the CP-1000.

However, that advice woulda been better last night a s newegg proce just shot up $40

Scythe Cooler is a great selection for $40. Add Shin Etsu TIM and you'll be in great shape. However, considering the amounts being spent on other items, might wanna upgrade to the Megahalems:

RAM - The RAM you have chose simply won't fit w/ that cooler. It won't fit w/o the cooler in the 1st slot (assuming at some point, you intend to fill all 6 slots) as expect the heat sink will hit most of the top air coolers. Look for low profile RAM that will fit under your cooler. You won't be able to find 3 x 4GB in a CAS 6 module so that leaves you with just two choices on newegg. Gaming won't need any more than 6 GB but Maya / CS4 and 5 will if you are running big enough projects (big if). If you determine that you don't need the 12 GB, these 3 x 2GB sites will fit under most CPU coolers even if ya fill all 6 slots.

Consider twin 470's superclocked if ya don't think twin 580's is in your future.

As to the SSD, I completed two very similar builds this month w/ same MoBo/CPU. One used a HAF-932 the other DF-85 w/ CP-850. We chose the Vertex 2, 3.5" 120 GB for $200. My thinking was that i wasn't gonna bother with SATA III unless RAID 0 on the SSD's was on the table (which it wasn't).

You are not the first person to tell me to choose a different case, but I chose the Antec 1200 because it has a front eSATA port.

I do also plan on picking up some Arctic Cooling thermal compound so I am covered there.

As far as my RAM and cooler not playing well together, how do I find this kind of information out? I would really like to use 12gb of RAM as I will be doing some pretty intense 3D modeling and work in CS4.

I was considering getting twin 470's, but then the 580 came out and now I plan on getting two of those.

Thanks for the response on the SSD, I will be taking that into consideration.

Go with a Corsair H70 for cooling.
You wont have memory fitting issues.

The DF-85 dropped the external E-SATA for an external SATA drive cage. No need for a wire. You can actually hot-swap an SSD or HD right into the case's SATA back plane. Much more elegant solution.

I'd skip Artic Silver and it's 200 hours of curing time (one year of thermal cycling required for curing under normal use).

12 GB works (6 x 2GB), you just have to tweak down the speed a bit as the system has to coordinate 6 slots instead of 3. 3 x 4GB is just inordinately expensive and you can't buy 4 GB modules at CAS 6.

The thermal compound I am getting is not the Arctic Silver 5 it is the Arctic Cooling MX-4, which from what I have read has no curing time whatsoever.

@mark_k - Thanks for the suggestion. That looks like a much better alternative then replacing my chosen memory.

I have yet to hear an answer as to how I can tell if a HSF will overhang too much on the RAM slots.

I am also wanting some more opinions on my original SSD questions. Does anyone know about any upcoming SATA III SSD?
