Want to add second 22" LCD, but only one 2.0 PCI Express x16

I have one 22" LCD with PCI-E 2.0 and would like to add another so that both monitors run at 1680x1050.

Motherboard has only one 2.0 PCI Express x16 and one PCI Express x1.

To add a second 22", would a PCI Express x1 Graphics Card (seems a bit rare) do the job or do I need a motherboard with two 2.0 PCI Express x16?

Would one graphics card that you suggest handle the resolution of two monitors at each 1680 x 1050? [making the desktop 3360px accross]

It is working fine on my 2 year old GeForce card with one DVI and one VGA port. Both at 1680 x 1050. As simple as plug and play, took me longer to match the colour on both monitors.

Any modern video card can handle two monitors at the same time outside of gaming.

I use my X1900XT for both my NEC LCD2690WUXi and Planar PX191 so that I can watch video and surf at the same time. Playing Fallout 3 and watching a video at the same time causes a performance hit on both game and video (skipping).

What do people even think gpus are for....

I believe only nvidia quadro cards will both screens as a large single monitor. Not sure about AMD GPUs. If your not gaming you could also look into Matrox.

My 9800gtx+ runs two monitors as a single monitor just fine wth are you on about?
