Unable to initialise ide hard drive / i/o device error

Hi i am Unable to initialise ide hard drive / i/o device error. I am usind a ide/usb adapter.

This is connected to a laptop with win 7 home premium. The adapter is compatable with the os but the drive is not showing up in my computer.

Really need help with this as i want to recover some pics from the old IDE.

Cable the drive up to a desktop system. Then download the pictures to a thumb drive.

so the ide/sata to usb cable is rendered useless? I will try it in a desktop...would i need to set the (jumper) on the IDE to cable select or master for it to show alongside my primary SATA?
