Here are the specs:

ASRock P45X3 Deluxe MB
E8400 Wolfdale CPU
2X 2Gb Gskill DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
EVGA 9800GTX 512mb 256bit GC
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320Gb HD
Cooler Master Silent Pro 700 Modular Power Supply

Here is the problem:

On power up I can never even get into bios, it just continuously cycles power on and off ever few seconds. I have tried one stick of ram at a time in every slot available with no change in behavior. I have removed power cable, pressed pwr button for 30 seconds, and cleared cmos with jumper for several minutes and no change. If I remove the ram (which is listed as compatible on the asrock website) and insert a 2 gig ocz 1066 stick (not on the compatibility list for this mb) i can manage to get into bios after a couple of power cycles, and even managed to get xp completely installed but thats where my luck ran out. I started getting random reboots and more powercycling occured. Once i was able to get it to post again I put in my memtest86 disc and the errors immediately started scrolling down the screen (probably the compatibility issue?) Anyway I can't figure out why the original sticks I tried were listed as compatible, and yet i couldn't even get it to post at all. I have 2 more sticks of g skill 1333 showing up tomorrow, but if that doesn't pan out then I'm out of ideas. I read reviews on newegg of other people having the same problem with the powercycling, but why does it do this? Even with the ocz i used to get it to post, it would still power cycle once at startup before going to bios every time the power had been removed. Is this normal at all?? I'm tempted to RMA this board if the next ram I throw in doesn't give me any better luck. This is only my 6th build, but I have never had anything like this happen before and can't find anything online conclusive to solve this problem. Thanks in advance for ANY help or suggestions.

I should add that I also tried removing the power and reset switch wires from the motherboard, and had no luck. Also just realized that I should have posted this under custom computers so sorry for that.

Additional info: Ok so apparantly it IS posting but it hangs on code "d4" which says "test 512 base memory" and then powers down and repeats the process. Never get to bios though.

im having the same problem! using the same motherboard and ram! let me know if you figure it out or if the new ram works! thanks.

Nice to know I'm not alone, and based on the fact that you have the same problem I'm guessing it's a ram issue rather than bad motherboard unless they produced multiple defective boards. I will get the new ram this afternoon and post a reply once I find out if it solves the problem. I'm guessing that the voltages need to be adjusted, but this doesn't help if we can't even get into bios. This seems to be a quarky board or something being that the reviews on newegg show that others had the same problem with a reboot cycle.

Morphreus:

I got it working here's how:

First I RMA'd the 1600 ddr3 sticks, and ordered this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231179
You have to start with one stick to get it to bios in the slot closest to the cpu. I also held the clear cmos button on the back of the computer for 5 secs before hooking the power cord back up. Once you get into bios make the following changes:
1) Go to advanced>chipset settings>dram frequency> and set it to 667mhz (1333)
2) Go to advanced>chipset settings>voltage configuration>dram voltage> and set it manually to 1.561v
3) Make sure to save and exit, then after reboot is complete power down, disconnect power, and you can put in your second stick for dual channel.

I ran memtest86+ 4.0 with this setup and no errors. The motherboard does seem to do one quick cycle before booting whenever the power has been disconnected though. Anyway hope this help you out.

ah thank you! at least i know it's definately a ram issue now. i ordered similar ram, specifically http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231189

which is pretty much the same except it is PC 10666 instead of 10600

the 667 part will be the same, but should i set the voltage to something other than 1.561? or should that be the same too?

thank you so much for responding.

i also don't necessarily mean a RAM issue.. more of a board issue but the new ram should fix the problem

Reply to m0rphr3us

Yeah those sticks are the same voltage 1.5v so set it to the 1.561v in bios like i described above. Let me know if it works for you. Good luck.
