External vs Internal

Hello,
I have an old Dell Dimension 4400 with a 20GB hard drive. As you could imagine it is full. I am adding a usb 2.0 pci card and would like your thoughts on a new hard drive. External makes sense to me due to the computer's age, but I am concerned about usb choking down speed. An internal hard drive would work, but if i get a new computer later on it wont use the old IDE interface. Thanks in advance for your answers.

How about a SATA expansion card and a new SATA drive plugged into it?

Or, because hard drives are cheap enough, you can go with the external drive. You can always use an external drive, if just for system backups.
